Pick a plan, check the live level for each float, then book. All floats, campgrounds and outfitters below are real and linked.

Kids, first-timers · Middle District · any time the level is Good
Float: Tyler Bend to Gilbert (5.4 mi, Easy) — or shorten to Tyler Bend to Grinder's Ferry (1.1 mi, Easy) for little ones.
Book: a Middle District outfitter; ask for a morning launch so you have time for swim stops.
Plan: start at the Tyler Bend visitor center (restrooms, exhibits), stop on gravel bars for lunch, finish at Gilbert. Kids 12 and under must wear life jackets.
Bring: the checklist, extra water, snacks, a change of clothes in the car.

Some paddling experience · Middle District
Float: Gilbert to North Maumee (11.6 mi, Moderate) split over two days, or Mt. Hersey to Woolum (8.6 mi, Moderate) for more solitude.
Camp: any gravel bar — no permit required (NPS). Pick one well above the water with an easy escape to higher ground; pull boats high and tie them off. Free primitive sites at South Maumee and Woolum are backups.
Book: a Middle District outfitter for a two-day rental and shuttle.
Rules to know: no glass within 100 ft of the river, no foam coolers, bury waste 6–8 in deep and 200 ft from water or pack it out. Check the forecast — rain upstream can raise the river overnight.

Couples, groups · Upper District in spring, Lower in summer
Spring version (Upper): day 1 Ponca to Steel Creek (2.7 mi, Moderate) as a warm-up, day 2 Steel Creek to Kyle's Landing (8.0 mi, Moderate). Base near Ponca or Jasper; ask Upper District outfitters about lodging.
Summer version (Lower): day 1 Spring Creek to Dillard's Ferry (4.6 mi, Easy), day 2 Buffalo Point to Rush (7.5 mi, Moderate). Stay at the Buffalo Point cabins (the only lodging inside the park) or near Yellville.
Off-river: evening elk watching in Boxley Valley (spring version) or the Indian Rockhouse trail at Buffalo Point (summer version). See where to stay.

Late October–early November, if there’s water
Float: lower river first — Buffalo Point to Rush (7.5 mi, Moderate) or South Maumee to Spring Creek (4.7 mi, Easy) — since the upper river is often too low by fall. If a good rain comes through, Pruitt to Hasty (6.8 mi, Easy) is a beautiful option.
Book: a Lower District outfitter; check they’re still running (many reduce hours after summer).
Dress: water is cold — wool or synthetic layers, no cotton, a dry bag with a full change of clothes. Set a “Good to go” alert and go when it fires.
