The Buffalo, month by month
The Buffalo is mostly rain-fed, so water is never guaranteed. NPS describes the paddling season starting on the upper river in spring and moving downstream as the year dries out; wet years extend it, dry years shorten it. The “typical water” column is that general pattern, not a prediction — check live levels before you go.
| Month | Typical water (general pattern) | Crowds | Weather | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Unpredictable; floatable after rains, mostly lower river | Very quiet | Cold; ice possible | Campground water systems winterized (NPS); primitive camping still open |
| February | Rising chance of upper-river water after rain | Very quiet | Cold to cool | Winter services only |
| March | Upper river often starts running | Picking up; spring break weekends busy | Cool, variable | Campground fees and water start ~Mar 15 (NPS) |
| April | Often the best month for the upper river | Busy weekends | Mild; storms common | Wildflowers; watch for flash flooding |
| May | Upper river still possible; middle & lower usually good | Peak — Memorial Day very busy | Warm | Ranger programs begin around Memorial Day (NPS) |
| June | Upper river dropping; middle & lower reliable | Busy, especially weekends | Hot | Great swimming |
| July | Middle & lower river; upper usually too low | Busy weekends, quieter weekdays | Hot and humid | Start early; carry extra water |
| August | Mostly lower river; middle can get scrapey | Moderate | Hottest | Low water = clear swimming holes |
| September | Lower river; others depend on rain | Quieter after Labor Day | Warm days, cooler nights | Elk rut begins in Boxley Valley (fall) |
| October | Lower river; rain can bring the upper river back briefly | Busy on color weekends | Pleasant; cool nights | Fall color usually peaks late Oct–early Nov; elk active |
| November | Variable; after-rain floats possible | Quiet | Cool to cold | Fees/water end ~Nov 14 (NPS) |
| December | Unpredictable | Very quiet | Cold | Dress for cold water — hypothermia risk (NPS) |
